Creighton’s school-record eight match home winning streak was snapped on Friday night as visiting Northern Illinois invaded D.J. Sokol Arena and swept the Bluejays, 25-19, 25-21, 25-21. Creighton dropped to 1-4 on the season, while Northern Illinois improved to 4-2.
Lauren Wicinksi had 19 kills to pace the Huskies, while Karisa Almgren led Creighton with 13 kills. The 13 kills by Almgren made her the only Bluejay with 10 or more kills. Second on the team with eight kills and a team-high five blocks was fellow senior Laurel Sanford, who also hit a team-best .375. In addition, Julianne Mandolfo had a match-best 23 digs for Creighton while Natalie Hackbarth served up half of Creighton’s four aces. Creighton had 38 kills, four aces, 46 digs and seven blocks while hitting .230 as a team.
In the first match of the tournament, Marquette defeated South Dakota, 3-1 (25-12, 19-25, 25-13, 25-21).
Play in the Bluejay Invitational concludes on Saturday with four matches. Marquette takes on Northern Illinois at 10 am, followed by Creighton against South Dakota at noon. The evening session starts at 5:30 pm when Northern Illinois plays South Dakota. Creighton hosts Marquette at 7:30 pm to round out the event.
