The V-A Health Care System in Omaha is combining yoga therapy with traditional treatment for those suffering with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Terry North is the V-A’s PTSD director and says recent studies show that yoga therapy can help with better sleep, improved ability to focus and concentrate, show less anger and irritability and have a more positive outlook on life.
North says those taking the class in Omaha have reported they are using techniques learned in class and using them in everyday life. Several veterans have reported back to her they feel calmer after class and can take what they learned with them. Most of that includes breathing and relaxation techniques. North says yoga is also helping veterans manage chronic pain.
Yoga therapy started in July and is growing in popularity. The V-A is also offering yoga classes in Lincoln. The V-A Health Care System in Omaha serves Nebraska and western Iowa veterans.
