The new move “Contagion” has viewers on the edge of their seat but could something like this really happen? Dr. Adi Pour is the Director of the Douglas County Health Department and says we have seen similar incidents of a virus spreading very rapidly.
Dr. Pour stated a new virus can emerge “anywhere and at anytime” and it could happen right here. She says H1N1 was a prime example.
In the movie a team of doctors are rushing to find a cure for a deadly virus that spreads rapidly. Dr. Pour says that part isn’t really make believe as that is what is done when there is a threat of a widespread illness. Dr. Pour says “over the last few years the public health force has become more trained to recognize these illnesses and to quickly test to identify what they are and then determine which treatment is available.”
Dr. Pour says they may have to develop a vaccine to treat the virus.
If there is a “contagion” situation, Dr. Pour says the best prevention would be the same as battling the flu. One of the best preventions is to wash hands frequently.
