Voters in Omaha could be asked to help decide if a public safety auditor is needed in the city. Earlier this month University of Nebraska – Omaha criminal justice professor Sam Walker and Omaha’s former auditor Tristan Bonn stressed the importance of this position after a report was issued on a 2003 incident at a fire station where firefighters were accused of drinking on the job.
Omaha City Councilman Ben Gray believes oversight is needed. If another public safety auditor does come into play, he believes a committee made up of law enforcement, firefighters and others should decide the placement.
Gray is looking at changing the city charter to create a department for a public safety auditor. For a time Tristan Bonn held that position but was terminated by former Mayor Mike Fahey after she released an investigative report without getting his approval.
