An Omaha man is home after a life saving rescue last Friday. 41 year old Jeff Schneider was trapped for nearly four hours with dirt up to his waist after a trench collapse. Schneider was laying a water line for a house under construction at 192nd and Pacific Streets in Omaha when the dirt gave way.
Jeff’s brother, Jay Schneider, has experience in the industry and explains only one worker gets into a trench at a time. There are other workers above the trench looking for dangers, but sometimes they are unpredictable.
It took nearly four hours to free Schneider because the 15-foot trench had to be secured first to prevent further cave-ins. Rescue workers feared with the dirt tightly compacted around Schneider’s legs there could be issues with circulation. A medical helicopter was at the scene ready to transport Schneider once he was free. Schneider was released from the hospital over the weekend.
