Senior forward Ethan Finlay (Marshfield, Wis. / Marshfield) of the Creighton men’s soccer team has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday. The All-American notched his seventh career multiple-goal match as his two goals helped lead the third-ranked Bluejays past Providence 3-0 last Saturday.
Finlay, one of two MAC Hermann Trophy candidates for the Bluejays, got the scoring started early when he converted a penalty kick in the fourth minute of the match against nationally-ranked Providence. Providence entered the match having not allowed a goal in its previous four contests and having allowed only three goals total through its first six matches.
The reigning MVC Player of the Year added an insurance tally in the 76th minute, when he settled a feed from Bruno Castro with his chest and volleyed the ball into the right side of the net to conclude scoring in the 3-0 win.
Finlay, who as also tabbed to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week on Monday, has twice been named MVC Offensive Player of the Week in the first four weeks of the 2011 season. The senior from Marshfield, Wis., leads the team with four goals and 11 points this season.
