It is a case of less can be more – productive. Omaha State Senator Scott Lautenbaugh is considering introducing a bill that would limit the number of members on a school board. There are currently 12 Omaha Public School Board members and Senator Lautenbaugh says that many are unnecessary.
Senator Lautenbaugh suggests restricting the number to five have district elections and pay them something for their services. He believes that would attract higher profile, professional people to the post.
This stems from a request by a new school board member to get staffing information from the district. That board member was denied the request and was told that information would infringe the superintendent’s authority.
Senator Lautenbaugh is receiving encouragement from those he talked to about limiting the number of school board members. He may introduce a bill addressing the issue come January.
