Senator Nelson opposes a proposed change to military retirement benefits.
Nelson says he will write Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, urging him to reject a proposal to scrap the military pension plan in favor of a 401(k)-type plan. Nelson says there are other ways to cut the federal budget.
“Washington must cut spending and balance the budget,” according to Nelson. “We simply can’t do it on the backs of America’s military and their families.”
The recommendation has been made by the Defense Business Board, an advisory group to the Pentagon. Nelson claims the move would reduce retirement benefits and hurt recruitment.
According to a news release from Nelson’s office, the senator will send Panetta the letter by the end of the week. Nelson is circulating the letter among fellow senators, asking them to sign on in opposition. Nelson says the retirement system is part of the promises the government makes to the military.
