The body of an 8-year-old western Nebraska girl missing since Wednesday morning has been found. Her stepfather, Salvador Carlos Lopez, has been charged with her death.
The Nebraska State Patrol reports a rancher alerted investigators to the body of Kerra Wilson, several miles north of Mitchell. Preliminary identification of the body was made through articles of clothing, physical characteristics and evidence gathered at the scene. The time of night and the rugged terrain prevented investigators from processing the scene and removing the body.
Lopez had claimed he dropped Kerra off at school Wednesday morning. School officials reported that she had never made it to class and nobody at the school had seen her.
“We were hoping to bring Kerra safely home to her family; sadly we weren’t able to do that,” said Lt. Monica Bartling of the Nebraska State Patrol in a written statement. “We will continue gathering evidence in this case and work with the Sioux County Attorney to prosecute Salvador Lopez to the fullest extent of the law.”
The patrol says Lopez is being held in the Scotts Bluff County Detention Center on a charge of 1st Degree Murder.
