The step-father of a young western Nebraska girl missing since Wednesday morning has been charged with murdering her.
Nebraska State Patrol Lt. Monica Bartling reports that 32-year-old Salvador Carlos Lopez has been charged with first degree murder in the death of 8-year-old Kerra Wilson. Lopez is being held in the Scotts Bluff County jail.
Lopez had initially told investigators he had let Kerra out at the parking lot of her elementary school Wednesday morning. Bartling says investigators became suspicious of Lopez after they couldn’t find anyone at the school who had seen her. She says the last time Kerra was seen was at her grandparent’s home Tuesday evening.
The Nebraska State Patrol reports a rancher alerted investigators to the body, several miles north of Mitchell. Preliminary identification of the body was made through articles of clothing, physical characteristics and evidence gathered at the scene. The time of night and the rugged terrain prevented investigators from processing the scene and removing the body.
