Knox County supervisors have approved plans for the Crofton Bluffs Wind project, which will operate near the Elkhorn Ridge wind farm.
Mark Becker, with Nebraska Public Power District, says they are working with project developers and will buy the power generated by the turbines.
The original developers sold out to Midwest Wind and Becker says NPPD worked out a power purchase agreement.
The wind farm should be operational next year. Becker says it’s another substantial investment in wind power. He says an 80-megawatt wind would be worth $150-to-160-million so this is about half that at between $75-and-90-million.
NPPD now gets just under 2% of its power from wind towers, but Becker says that will grow rapidly.
The goal is to have 10% of renewable energy come from wind. By the end of 2012, about 240 megawatts of wind power will be available for use, about halfway to the 10% goal.
A total of 22 wind turbines will be built on a ten-acre site north of Bloomfield, beside the current Elkhorn Ridge wind farm.
