Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez was intercepted three times as the 8th ranked Huskers lost their Big Ten debut to the #7 Badgers 48-17, Saturday night in Madison, WI.
Wisconsin turned those miscues into 21 points. Martinez started out well putting NU on top 7-0 midway through the first quarter and after Wisconsin tied the game, the Huskers went up 14-7 early in the second on a one yard run from Rex Burkhead.
Montee Ball scored his second of three touchdowns to make the game 14-13 after the point after try was blocked. Ball finished with 151 yards on the ground. From there it was all Badgers.
In a stretch of four possessions covering the end of the first half and the start of the third quarter, Martinez was picked off three times. NU’s last possession of the first half ended in a missed FG by Brett Maher.
Wisconsin scored 28 unanswered points to build a 41-14 lead. NU was outgained 486-335. Wisconsin QB Russell Wilson passed for 14-20 for 255 yards and two touchdowns.
There is a lot of work that needs to be done. It’s clear that Martinez does not quite have a solid grasp of Tim Beck’s offense despite what he has told us this year about being comfortable with the new system. The offensive line was pushed around and the secondary showed it’s youth as they were picked apart.
