This is National Fire Prevention Week and residents statewide are urged to develop a fire escape plan for their family. Omaha Fire Department Spokesman Jim Gentile tells us it is also very important to have a working smoke alarm in your home. As part of Fire Prevention Week departments city-wide are offering free smoke alarms. If citizens have purchased a smoke detector and need assistance installing it, area fire departments will make the time to stop by and do it for them.
Fire officials also recommend once you have an exit plan in place for your home practice it several times a year. It is also a good time to check for damaged electrical cords and outlets and have them replaced. Smoke detectors should be placed at various locations throughout a home including outside every bedroom. Smoke detectors need to be replaced every ten years.
