Nebraska counseling professionals have been working without a code of ethics for three years
National Association of Social Workers Executive Director Terry Werner tells us they’re petitioning for that to change.
He says they’ve been held up because of complaints from the Catholic Conference over having to counsel gay couples.
Werner says they believe in the right to refuse service to clients based on moral or religious grounds, but must provide a referral.
Werner says the catholic conference said that compromise would also be a conflict of their moral beliefs.
“All of the professions’ code of ethic says that you must provide a referral. It’s a line in the sand that cannot be compromised by our profession.” Werner adds.
Werner says that because of that the Administration has failed to advance the professions’ code of ethics. Werner says that leaves them sitting in limbo.
