Governor Dave Heineman was among those who attended a commissioning ceremony this week at the $100-million, 27-turbine wind farm near Petersburg.
“The Third Planet wind power facility really is a very significant expansion of Nebraska’s wind power capacity, 40-and-a-half megawatts here,” Governor Heineman says. “We get out there and we work our tails off and we get these projects done.”
Electricity generated from the farm will be sold to Omaha Public Power District to power about 12,000 customers over the next 20 years.
Third Planet chief development officer Jim Kutey says they’re looking at more sites in Nebraska.
“With two additional projects in our pipeline, one in western Nebraska and one just up the road in Madison County, we’re hopeful that we can repeat today’s celebration real soon,” Kutey says.
The Boone County wind farm sits on about 13,000 acres, roughly five miles east of Petersburg. Kutey says this is a unique project.
“It interconnects in the NPPD service territory and supplies OPPD area loads,” he says. “As such, it represents a new link between rural Nebraska and the urban environment of OPPD.”
