Hundreds of people stood in line at the Open Door Mission in Omaha this week to sign up for home delivered meals this holiday season. CEO Candace Gregory says they started registering people for food boxes at 9 am but people started arriving at 5 to stand in line. More than 3,500 people signed up in two days to receive a Thanksgiving food box and to get a winter coat.
Gregory says there was such a demand for winter coats and warm clothing their emergency supply was depleted and they desperately need more. They are also in need of warm clothing and blankets.
On Saturday, volunteers with the Open Door Mission will deliver 5,000 meals to those in need through their “Drumsticks on Wheels” program. The still need about 100 drivers to help out.
Gregory says they have seen a huge increase in the number of people needing assistance with the basics like food. Another new trend is 86-percent of those signing up for assistance are working but not making enough money to make ends meet.
