It is easy enough to say the special teams break downs were the difference for what Michigan needed in their 45-17 win over the Huskers at the Big House in Ann Arbor. As I watched the game, I really felt that NU was evenly matched with Michigan, but it just goes to show how special team’s mistakes can turn a game on its side.
The three big plays. The fumbled kickoff return to start the second half by Kenny Bell. Then Brett Maher’s bobbled snap and had his punt blocked. Both plays led to 14 points. Then trying to swing momentum and make a big play, NU gets flagged with roughing the kicker keeping a drive alive that Bo Pelini didn’t agree with.
On top of that, in the fourth quarter, Tim Marlowe’s fumbled kickoff and then Taylor Martinez’ fumble. In all, 28 points coming off of Husker miscues. You take those points off the board, it’s a 17-17 game. Bo Pelini thought his team was ready to play. He can’t answer for the mistakes.
