A former law officer in Beatrice and Gage counties is sentenced to prisontime for the sexual assault of two girls at their rural Filley home when they were eight and 11 years old.
Terry Stiles Junior was sentenced to consecutive prison terms of 36 months to 60 months on two counts of sexual assault of a child. Stiles apologized before being sentenced in Gage County District Court.
“I did take responsibility for my actions in the defendant’s statement,” Stiles says. “Certainly, I have issues with some of the things that have been said and which the jury has proven that I have done and found me guilty of. They are a struggle for me considering that’s the kind of thing I have fought all of my life in wanting to make the world a better place and, clearly, I have failed in this case.”
Stiles was convicted in a jury trial in late September. Special Prosecutor Julie Smith-Hogancamp says it’s a case that deserves a prison sentence.
“The evidence at the trial from the two victims who testified was that Mr. Stiles perpetrated these acts upon them a number of times when he was entrusted with their care as their babysitter,” Smith-Hogancamp says. “What’s really sad is that Mr. Stiles has shown no remorse. It’s had a huge impact on the two victims.”
Gage County District Judge Paul Korslund said it was clear Stiles had not taken responsibility for his actions, based on a pre-sentencing statement from Stiles as to what he claimed had happened.
“The victims were very credible witnesses and I’m sorry they had to go through the ordeal but they did that with courage and honesty,” Judge Korslund says. “I find it very unfortunate that you don’t take responsibility and cast blame on others.”
He called children the state’s most precious resource and found it particularly disturbing that Stiles was in a position of trust with the girls who were the victims.
Stiles will be required to register as a sex offender and the judge said Stiles will be subject to a civil commitment for evaluation if he fails to complete sex offender treatment.
