The annual “You Drink and Drive You Lose” campaign is underway. Nebraska State Patrol Captain Bret Friesz says the campaign started Friday and it will run through January 1, 2012. Along with the State Patrol, law enforcement agencies will participate in the campaign with the goal of getting intoxicated drivers off the road.
Captain Friesz says they are asking everyone to be responsible motorists this season and don’t drive while impaired or distracted and always wear your seatbelt. He says they will be taking several approaches at keeping intoxicated drivers off the roads. They will be conducting high visibility patrols, DWI checkpoints and other efforts focusing on time periods in which alcohol related activates will be high.
Anyone witnessing an impaired or reckless driver can call the State Patrol Highway Helpline by dialing *55 from any cell phone or 1-800-525-555 from a landline. This is also available for non-emergency roadside assistance.
Motorists are also encouraged to utilize the 511, the state’s automated traveler information system for the latest road conditions report. The State Patrol website is “statepatrol.nebraska.gov/”. A $22,595 grant from the Nebraska Department of Highway Safety will fund the special enforcement.
