The closed sign is up on the Plattsmouth Bridge along Highway 34 that leads from Nebraska into Iowa. Roger Johnson is on the Plattsmouth Bridge Commission and says this well-traveled bridge will undergo an inspection this week. A “fracture critical bridge inspection” is required every two years and it has been that long ago since the last one was done.
The bridge will be closed through Wednesday but Johnson says it may not re-open until Thursday. They are also taking the time for an inspection of rivets to make sure none are missing, rusted or broken.
The Plattsmouth Toll Bridge was built in 1929 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
