Omaha is gearing up for one final gun amnesty day in 2011. Ray Fidone is the Director of the Project Safe Neighborhood Operation and says those with unwanted ammo or weapons can safely dispose of them with no questions asked.
Those wanting to get rid of weapons and ammo can drop them off at the Omaha Civic Auditorium Music Hall between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm on Saturday, December 17th. They will have a drive-thru lane set up so those with weapons will not have to get out of their car.
Fidone says police will be doing serial number checks on guns to make sure they are not stolen. If a reported stolen weapon does show up it will be returned to the rightful owner. They will also do ballistic testing on the guns turned in to see if any were used in a crime.
This is the third gun amnesty day for 2011. Events held in June and July resulted in 75 guns collected.
