An organization that works 24/7 to provide food to pantries and individuals in Nebraska and western Iowa may have to dip into an endowment fund to help cover damage done by vandals. Brian Barks is the spokesman for the Food Bank of the Heartland and says these thieves targeted air conditioning and heat units at their old facility at 68th and J Streets in Omaha.
Barks says they were doing a final inspection prior to the closing of the building when it was discovered that the copper had been ripped out of a number of units on the roof. The estimated damage totals $90,000.
Barks is hoping insurance will cover the damage but they are planning to take that money out of an endowment fund to pay for new units. Barks says that is money the Food Bank for the Heartland planned to put to much better use.
