The Grand Island Police Department is launching a full review of its procedures after a witness to a crime was left in the police station, forgotten, for nearly a full day.
Grand Island’s police chief says he’s apologized to the man who was brought into the station on Friday night after he witnessed a stabbing.
An officer took the man to an interview room and questioned him about what he saw. The officer then went off and did other interviews and eventually went home.
Two friends of the witness came looking for the man the next day and found him, asleep on the interview room floor. He’d been there 22 hours.
Due to the language barrier or cultural differences, he’d stayed put. The chief says the man, who’s from another country, wasn’t confined and could’ve left at any time.
