Creighton men’s soccer freshmen Eric Miller and Jeff Gal have been called upon to compete for U.S. Soccer this January. Gal is one of two goalkeepers representing the U.S. in the 2012 U-19 Stuttgart Junior Cup in Germany, while Miller will train with the U-20 National Team at a 36-player training camp in Florida this week.
Gal, who redshirted the 2011 season behind first-team All-America goalkeeper Brian Holt, has previously spent time in the U.S. Soccer program. In 2011 he trained with the U-18 National Team in Phoenix, Ariz., and Portland, Ore., before traveling with the team to Lisbon, Portugal for the Lisbon International Tournament.
The U-19 Team is leaving on Jan. 3 to prepare for the annual Stuttgart Junior Cup in Stuttgart, Germany. The indoor tournament will be held at the Crystal Palace Arena and the competition features multiple 15-minute mini-games in six-a-side soccer on a 50×30 meter field with no walls. The U.S. team will face teams from Poland, Germany, France, Italy and Scotland.
Miller earned all-Missouri Valley Conference freshman team notice while starting 23 of 24 matches as a right outside back in 2011 after enrolling at Creighton for the spring 2011 semester. The Woodbury, Minn., native helped the Bluejays to MVC regular-season and tournament championships and an appearance in the NCAA College Cup semifinals.
Miller was also invited to training camp with the U-18 National Team last February. Miller will play for head coach Tab Ramos in a camp held in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., lasting until Jan. 9. The Bluejay back will be joined by 14 professional players as the U-20 National Team prepares for the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup qualifying tournament.
