Former Governor and Senator Bob Kerrey will be returning to Nebraska this week. He plans to spend four or five days in his home state meeting and talking to people about a possible run for the Senate seat currently held by Senator Ben Nelson. Kerrey says he has to make a decision quickly as there are several good candidates that will not run for the seat if he decides yes.
There are some accusing Kerrey of being a “carpetbagger” and returning to Nebraska only to seek election. Kerrey stated that couldn’t be farther from the truth. While Kerrey doesn’t physically live in Nebraska he stated he still pays property taxes here. He also stated, “No, I mean there are worst things than losing an election. In some ways I’m more concerned about what happens if I win. If you lose an election, it’s over. If you win you have to go back to Washington for six years”.
Kerrey states if he decides to run, “If I’ll do, I’ll come enthusiastically and put my name forward. If people select me and ask me to represent them, I’ll do it. If they don’t no hard feelings”. The 68 year old Democrat represented Nebraska in the U-S Senate for 12 years. The deadline to declare candidacy for Nelson’s seat is March 1st.
