The Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks hockey team ended No. 1 Minnesota Duluth’s 17-game unbeaten streak, beating the defending national champions 3-1 on Saturday night in Omaha. The win gave the Mavericks a split of the weekend series against the nation’s top team. They are now 11-9-4 overall and 8-5-3 in the WCHA. It was the first win for the Mavericks against a top-ranked team since they beat Miami 4-2 on Feb. 20, 2010.
The game-winning goal came on a heads up play by UNO freshman Andrew Schmit. He took a pass from Brent Gwidt and whipped the puck on goal. The shot surprised UMD goalie Kenny Reiter, and the puck broke through his pads for Schmit’s first collegiate goal.
Josh Archibald scored into an empty net with a little over a minute remaining to ice the game. The Mavericks were outshot 44-15 for the game but rode the sparkling goaltending of freshman Ryan Massa who made 43 saves for his fifth win of the year.
