Doug McDermott led #15 Creighton with 30 points as the Bluejays improved to 19-2 on the season, 9-1 in the MVC with a 77-69 win over Drake on Wednesday. Playing just down the road from his high school in Ames, McDermott scored 12 of Creighton’s final 16 points, as the Bluejays picked up their ninth win in a row.
Creighton led by as many as 15 points in the opening half, using a 21-5 run to take a 37-22 lead with 2:16 left in the opening frame. McDermott led all scorers in the opening half, scoring 13 points and pulling down seven rebounds.
The Bulldogs opened the second half on an 18-9 run pulling the game to 46-44 with 13:23 left to play. Drake’s two point deficit would be the closest the Bulldogs would come in the second half, despite Creighton playing a majority of the final ten minutes without Gregory Echenique, who picked up his fourth foul with 10:40 remaining in the game.
McDermott took over, hitting four free-throws in a row to cap off a stretch in which the sophomore scored 10 straight points for the Jays, giving Creighton the 71-65 lead with two and a half minutes to play. McDermott scored 12 of Creighton’s final 16 points.
Creighton finished the night shooting 50% from the field, led by McDermott who led all scorers with 30 points. McDermott also led the Jays in rebounding,as Creighton held the 37-25 advantage in boards.
