Attorney General Jon Bruning has invited other Attorneys General to challenge the Obama Administration ruling that religious organizations must provide coverage of contraceptives in their employee health care plans.
Bruning says the ruling violates the First Amendment rights of those organizations.
“I’m shocked that the Obama Administration is forcing people to violate their conscience, to pay premiums for insurance that they don’t want, specifically contraception, morning-after abortion pills,” Bruning says.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has objected to the ruling, declaring it a violation of religious liberty. The Roman Catholic Church prohibits the use of contraception. The conference has based its objections on the First Amendment guarantee of religious freedom.
Bruning says he has pledged to coordinate a lawsuit led by the Attorneys General “to stop this direct challenge to religious liberty.”
