Work on the 2012 Farm Bill is underway. U-S Senator Ben Nelson the value of each program in the bill must be considered before the budget axe falls. The Agriculture Committee held its first hearing of the year. Senator Nelson says this is really a Food and Fuel Security Act and the meeting focused on how rural development and alternative energy production programs can and are supporting sustained economic development and jobs in rural America.
Senator Nelson says Nebraska’s ethanol industry is doing very well and that benefits the nation as a whole. He says ethanol production from the state’s 25 plants topped 1.9-billion gallons. Four-percent of that went into Nebraska fuel tanks.
Senator Nelson says another function of the Farm Bill is to develop legislation that relies on crop insurance as its base.
