It is a very special day for Florence Young of Omaha. Florence is turning a very “young” 105 years old today. She tells us she has the last name of Young for a good reason and she attributes that partly to her long life. She giggled when she talked about having good friends, no aches or pains and that she is happy all the time.
Florence’s parents were immigrants and both landed in Omaha. Her girlhood home was in the Dundee area and she had some pretty impressive neighbors. Living next door was the Borsheim’s and she grew up playing with their children. Across the street were the Fonda’s. Young said as a child she played with “Henry’s” sisters. Henry Fonda that is. He even encouraged her and got her a part in a production at the Omaha Community Playhouse.
Florence should be very proud of her accomplishments. She again giggles about being a swimsuit model in 1926. No doubt she is a go-getter and plowed fresh ground when it came to women in the work place. She was the first female real estate agent in Omaha.
Florence also well remembers the days of riding in horse and buggy’s, World War I, the 1929 stock market crash and the depression to the first man on the moon, nuclear power and cell phones.
Florence has lived at a retirement community for the past 21 years but continues to live independently.
