A former Wymore firefighter pleaded no contest Wednesday to several arson charges after admitting to starting three fires in rural areas last April.
Forty-five-year-old Bryan Campbell will be sentenced in May. A witness reported seeing Campbell’s pickup in the area of the fires, prompting an investigation.
Gage County Attorney Roger Harris says a state fire marshal’s deputy questioned Campbell on his whereabouts.
Harris says, “During the interview, Mr. Campbell confessed to starting two seperate and independent grass fires with his cigarette lighter somewhere east of Blue Springs.”
Those fires scorched grassland and a third fire burned a long line of fence, including 20 posts. Campbell has been in the Gage County Jail since April.
