It is full steam ahead in getting performance standards to a high level at the Ft. Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant. Earlier this week members of the Federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) met with Omaha Public Power District officials to review plans for restarting the plant. Last spring the Ft. Calhoun plant was not in operation for refueling followed by the summer Missouri River flood. An NRC inspection found problems with performance standards. OPPD C-E-O Gary Gates is taking full responsibility for getting those improvements done.
Gates stated, “We had an accountability model at OPPD that we don’t make excuses so I am accountable for the performance.”
Gates says OPPD is committed to returning the Fort Calhoun plant’s operational standard to the high level it once was.
The NRC says OPPD will need to address those issues before they resume operations however the NRC will not say what those issues are. They did indicate they were present before last year’s breaker room fire and the summer flood.
