Omaha firefighters pull a trapped resident from a burning apartment building at 99th and Fort Streets this morning. Flames and smoke could be seen from at least one mile away at 5:30 this morning coming from the Grandridge Apartments. Fire Department Spokesman Tim McCaw firefighters were notified immediately that a woman didn’t make it out of the building and the immediately initiated a rescue effort. After rescued from the building she was rushed to a hospital in extremely critical condition. Firefighter McCaw tells us there were no other injuries.
The roof became totally involved and firefighters then evacuated the building and called a second alarm. It took 1 1/2 hours to get the blaze under control.
The American Red Cross was called to the site and is helping 22 men, women and children who lost their homes. The cause is not known.
