The fire broke out around 5:30 Monday morning at the Grandridge Apartment Complex north of 99th and Fort Streets. The family of 56 year old April Baker says she tried to go back into her burning apartment Monday to retrieve a pet. Firefighters pulled Baker from the apartment.
Paramedics revived Baker on the way to Immanuel Medical Center and then transferred her to the University of Nebraska Medical Center where she died around 2 am Tuesday morning.
22 people were left without a home and the Red Cross is helping with immediate needs. The cause is not yet known.
