Gregory Echenique had 20 points and nine rebounds to pace a hot-shooting Creighton men’s basketball team to a 99-71 win over Evansville in semifinal round action of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.
Ranked 25th nationally by the Associated Press, Creighton (26-5) won its sixth straight game and will play Illinois State in its 12th MVC Tournament final all-time. The Bluejays are 10-1 in its previous ventures to the title game and swept the Redbird in the regular-season.
Echenique had 20 points to lead five Jays in double-figures. Valley Player of the Year Doug McDermott had 14 points and nine rebounds on 8-of-11 shooting while playing just 20 minutes. Also in double-figures were Antoine Young (13), Jones (12) and Will Artino (10). Young had six assists without a turnover, while freshman Austin Chatman dished a game-high seven assists on the day. Creighton shot 60.4 percent on the day, making 32-of-53 shots, and were also 12-of-23 from downtown. The Jays destroyed the Purple Aces on the glass, 43-17, and outscored UE 40-26 in the paint and 42-14 off the bench.
Creighton plays Illlinois State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
