With temperatures in the 70’s and 80’s, sidewalks and parks are packed with people wanting to enjoy the nice weather and spend time outdoors. Many people are out walking their dogs and parks are a popular destination for dog owners. Mark Langan is the Director of the Nebraska Humane Society in Omaha and says there have been five dog bites since last weekend and most of the victims were small children.
Langan says smaller children are running up to dogs that become fearful and nip or bite. Fortunately none of the bites were serious. Langan says dog owners have responsibility to keep their animal on a leash at all times while in public but parents also need to step up and teach their child that not all dogs are friendly.
Under certain situations all dogs can bite even if they have never shown signs of aggression in the past. Langan says that is why most owners of dogs that have a friendly disposition are taken back when their dog nips or bites.
Langan says parents need to teach their children to never run up to a dog they do not know and never approach a dog that is running loose with no owner in sight.
