The pilot of the plane that crashed in central Nebraska radioed for help just prior to the fatal plane wreck.
A pilot of a National Guard Helicopter picked up the distress call and notified authorities. He also reported the crash.
The Beechcraft 95-E55 Baron crashed just short of the Broken Bow Airport at around 1:30 Wednesday afternoon, according to the Custer County Sheriff’s office. 48-year-old John Webb of Huntsville, Texas, a passenger on the plane, died in the crash. The pilot, 34-year-old Dustin Webb also of Huntsville, suffered critical injuries in the wreck. Emergency crews initially took him to a local hospital, then flew him by emergency helicopter to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Lincoln. John Webb is Dustin’s uncle.
Investigators for the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are on the scene.
