Tori Torrescano was 2-for-3 with two home runs and five RBI to lead Iowa State to a 6-3 win over the Creighton Softball team on Wednesday.
Torrescano hit a two-run homer in the first inning and a three-run shot in the fifth for her third multi-homer game of the season. She now ranks third in ISU history with 24 career homers, and sixth with 78 RBI.
Creighton (17-15-1) out-hit ISU 8-4, but stranded nine runners, including six in scoring position.
Trailing 6-0 heading to the home half of the sixth, Creighton scored two runs and brought the tying run to the plate. Alexis Cantus singled and Bri Lingl walked to open the frame, and a short time later Brittanie Kreiser drove in a pair with a pinch-hit single off the glove of third baseman Dalyn Valera. The Jays loaded the bases with two away, only to have Allie Mathewson strike out looking on a 2-2 pitch from reliever Madison Jones.
Creighton’s lone tally in the seventh came on a homer by Amy Baker, her sixth of the season.
Iowa native Sammy Snygg (3-4) threw six innings in the circle for Creighton and was charged with the loss. She allowed four hits and four walks, but just two earned runs, as all four Iowa State (11-22) runs in the sixth inning were unearned after a Bluejay error to lead off the inning. Brittany Telecky pitched a scoreless sixth in relief for CU.
CU’s offense was paced by two hits each from Baker and Christa Ruf.
Torrescano had half of ISU’s four hits on the day to lead the Cyclone offense. Taylor Smith (3-1) earned the win with 5.2 innings of two-run ball before Jones earned her first save with the final four outs.
Creighton returns to Missouri Valley Conference play on Friday with a Noon doubleheader at Wichita State.
