A run of personal setbacks might have led to the shooting of a 21-year-old Bellevue woman.
Police report 21-year-old Michala Pomfret was taken to the Nebraska Medical Center in critical condition. A relative has requested the hospital not release her condition.
Her stepfather, 36-year-old Michael Williams, has been taken into custody, charged with the shooting.
The Omaha World-Herald reports a friend of Williams says Williams had told him he had been unemployed for about a year and that unemployment benefits had run out, he had separated from his wife and became upset when Pomfret moved back home.
Early reports indicated the shooting escalated from an argument at the home. The shooting took place on the porch of the home. Neighbors called police Tuesday morning after hearing gunshots and observing Williams run from the house.
The shooting prompted school officials to lock down nearby Betz Elementary School.
