A judge is ordering an Omaha contractor to pay an elderly Council Bluffs, Iowa, man more than $7,000 for failing to repair storm damage to the man’s home.
More than one consumer complained about Mark Schneidewind, owner of NationWide Construction and doing business under the name Midwest Restorations as well.
Customers alleged the Omaha company took payment but then either failed to provide services or when work was done, it was sub-standard.
In the case involving that 87-year-old Council Bluffs man, the homeowner’s insurance company paid NationWide in Omaha to repair storm damage to the house, but NationWide failed to do the work, then refused to refund the money.
Iowa’s attorney general has asked legislators to pass a bill targeting so-called “storm chasers” who go door to door after a tornado or hail storm and offer to do repairs.
The attorney general wants to make it clear Iowans can cancel a repair contract if their insurance company denies the claim, but the Senate this week took that provision out of the bill.
