Mike Montgomery tossed seven innings and was backed by the long ball as Omaha downed Round Rock, 7-2, Thursday night in the third of a four-game set. The Storm Chasers improve to 11-4.
For a second straight night, the Chasers took advantage of a Round Rock defensive lapse in the first inning that led to multiple runs. A fielding error by Leonys Martin in left field on a Tony Abreu base hit allowed Johnny Giavotella to race home from first base and Abreu to reach third, from where he scored on a Clint Robinson ground out. The Express got one one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Mike Bianucci.
Abreu belted a three-run home run in his next trip to the plate in the third before Terry Evans and Cody Clark smashed solo shots in the fourth to increase the lead to 7-1. Round Rock’s Zach Jackson was saddled with the loss after yielding the seven runs, five earned, on seven hits while walking four and striking out seven over 4 2/3 innings.
