Talk about stealing candy from a baby… this is almost worse. Omaha acting Parks Director Brook Bench says earlier this spring a lot of hard work was put into building a community garden on North 16th Street outside the Sherman Community Center. Over Mother’s Day weekend children from the area planted tomatoes, peppers, onions and other vegetables but their work was wiped out over this past weekend when vandals dug up the entire garden and took the plants.
Bench says the 4,800 square foot garden was stripped bare stunning everyone involved with the project. Bench said, “When you see the efforts of a bunch of kids nurturing plants and hope to feed their families and have pride in a project seeing it destroyed for absolutely no reason is pretty disheartening.”
Bench says to offset the evil deed done by the vandals some people have already started donating replacement plants. Omaha was one of ten cities to receive a 10-thousand dollar grant for the garden project.
