A traffic crash in central Nebraska late this afternoon killed three, including two coaches at Broken Bow High School. Nine students suffered injuries in the crash.
The Nebraska State Patrol reports the preliminary investigation indicates a pick-up driven by 70-year-old Albert Scherbeck of Ansley traveling east on Highway 2 crossed left of center and struck a westbound Broken Bow Public School van. The collision killed Scherbeck as well as Broken Bow High School head basketball coach Zane Havey, 38, who was driving the van. Also killed in the wreck was 24-year-old Anthony Blum, an assistant basketball coach at Broken Bow, who was riding in the front seat of the van. The nine students were taken to area hospitals, the extent of their injuries are at present unknown.
The Patrol reports the accident happened at around four o’clock this afternoon west of Ansley.
On the scene with the Nebraska State Patrol are the Custer County Sheriff’s Office, as well as rescue personnel from Ansley, Broken Bow, Mason City and Merna.
