41-year-old Charlotte Schilling of Plattsmouth killed her 10-year-old son, Owen, on May 10th at Lake Manawa near Council Bluffs, Iowa and then took her own life, authorities have revealed. Council Bluffs Police Sgt. Chad Meyers says autopsy results show both died of strangulation that was caused by use of a zip tie.
Sgt. Meyers says their investigation revealed that Charlotte Schilling had attempted to commit suicide in November of 2011 by also using a zip tie. He says she lost consciousness, but a family member intervened and was able to cut the tie from her neck. He says they did interview family members, friends and associates who said Schilling displayed behavior that was consistent of someone contemplating suicide.
Investigators say Charlotte Schilling picked Owen up from his Bellevue school early on May 10th. Both were reported missing on May 11th. That is when her vehicle was found parked at Lake Manawa, across the Missouri River in Iowa. Both bodies were found in a wooded area about 200 feet from a remote walking trail on May 20th.
Funeral services for both Schillings’ were held last week.
