Officials say there was no threat to national security or to Offutt Air Force Base near Bellevue Monday afternoon when a man was shot and killed by a private security contractor.
The incident started when Sarpy County Sheriff’s deputies spotted a possible stolen vehicle along Highway 75. The driver fled from a traffic stop. At that time Bellevue Police joined the chase.
That is when the man forced his way into the base through the SAC Gate, drove through the base and tried to exit at the Kenney Gate. Brigadier General Don Bacon says the suspect was closely followed by base security personnel. He says the only threat came as the man tried to force his way off the base and that is when a member of the 55th Security Forces Squadron at the Kenney Gate fired three shots hitting the suspect.
At that time a medical helicopter was called and the suspect was transported to a hospital in critical condition. He later was pronounced dead. His name has not yet been released.
