Plans are underway for Nebraska’s second hiring fair for veterans.
The Omaha Hiring Our Heroes Initiative will take place June 12th at the DC Centre Banquet Facility.
State Labor Commissioner Cathy Lang said Nebraska hopes to build on the success of the Lincoln Hiring Our Heroes Fair in April.
“So, we’re looking forward to having a great turnout by the veteran community and hopefully we’ll be able to find great jobs for them in our Nebraska economy,” Lang told reporters during a conference call today.
A Hiring Our Heroes Fair in Lincoln in April attracted more than 350 current and former members of the military and their spouses to speak with businesses about job openings. The Omaha Hiring Our Heroes Initiative is sponsored by the US Chamber of Commerce, the Nebraska Department of Labor and the Nebraska National Guard. The Hero2Hired (H2H) program and Walmart are sponsors of the Omaha event.
More than 80 businesses have registered for the Omaha fair so far, with hundreds of job openings to fill. Such job fairs seek to help military members and veterans translate military skills into the civilian job market. It covers such skills resume writing, professional etiquette and other career topics.
Heineman said the success of the Lincoln event encourages him that the event next week in Omaha will prove successful as well.
“But I think the fact that we had such a large number of employers plus veterans who showed up, that shows me it was a very successful event in that regard,” Heineman said.
