A Douglas County Sheriff’s deputy was injured Monday afternoon while conducting a traffic stop on westbound I-80 near Q Street in the metro Omaha area. K-9 Deputy Dave Wintle had just pulled over a jeep around 2:30. He had gotten out of the cruiser and had just made contact with the driver when the back of his cruiser was struck by a red pick up truck. The force of the accident pushed the cruiser past the vehicle that was stopped and the pick up flipped.
Deputy Dave Wintle was thrown about 20 feet but still able to call for assistance. He was taken to a hospital in serious condition.
The driver of the pick up 18 year old Lucas Green was critically injured. The man stopped was not injured.
Inside the deputy’s cruiser was his K-9 and it was taken to a vet to be checked and was not injured.
The Nebr. State Patrol is conducting the accident investigation.
