The Nebraska Forest Service says conditions across the state are dangerously dry.
There are rising concerns about the possibility of wildfires, similar to those in the western part of the U.S., here in Nebraska.
Don Westover with the Nebraska Forest Service says he hopes a proclamation made by Governor Dave Heineman will help raise awareness to preventing a wildfire.
“Summer lightning storms are going to come along and ignite some wildfires, and there’s nothing we can really do about that,” Westover says. “What we can do something about though, are people causing wildfires.”
Westover hopes Nebraskans can heed this year’s slogan: “Wildfire: If its predictable, it’s preventable”.
Governor Heineman proclaimed June as Wildfire Awareness Month today during a ceremony at the State Capital.
