The World is saved and will reopen June 29th. It took three years of hard work but the World Theatre Foundation is ready to open the renovated 1927 theatre in downtown Kearney. President Jon Bokenkamp says this grand old theatre deserved more than another dinosaur closed theatre taking up space on a city main street. That is when the World Theatre Foundation took over and decided to restore the World back to what it was in 1927.
It took three years and lots of volunteers to get the job done. Bokenkamp tells us they had to redo the plumbing, fire sprinklers, remove old plaster to drop ceilings and window air conditioners. They also corrected the lighting, installed new fixtures, and new seats that rock with armrests. They also remodeled the concession area with dark mahogany wood. They even secured a red curtain that will be pulled to view the screen prior to every movie.
Bokenkamp says after the grand reopening they will show movies on weekend and it won’t break the bank to go. He says it is five dollars for a ticket and popcorn is a dollar for a small and $3 for a large.
The World will reopen to a red carpet champagne reception prior to the showing of “Some Like It Ho
t” on June 29th. On June 30th they will conduct tours and there will be another reception prior to the showing of “Exit Through the Gift Shop”. On July 1st there is a matinee showing of “The Princess Bride”.
