Omar Poveda and three relievers combined on a five-hitter and Nick Green scored both runs as New Orleans blanked Omaha, 2-0, Friday night in the last of a four-game set at Zephyr Field. The Storm Chasers were shut out for the first time this year in a nine-inning game and fell to 5-3 on their 12-game road trip and 63-44 overall after splitting four games with the Zephyrs.
The hosts jumped in front in the second inning on a lead off long ball by Green, his second of the series. Chase Lambin drew a two-out walk but was thrown out at plate trying to score on a Chris Aguila double to end the frame.
Max Ramirez and Mitch Maier reached base to open both the third and fifth innings but never advanced against Poveda, making his first start against Omaha this season and doing so on short notice in replacing scheduled hurler Brad Hand. The right-hander earned his first Triple-A victory after he gave up three hits, walked one and struck out nine, including five of the first six hitters he faced.
Green opened the sixth with a single, moved up on a ground out, made it to third on an infield hit by Rob Brantly and dashed home on a Lambin sacrifice fly to finish the scoring.
Gary Glover took over for Poveda and allowed two hits over two scoreless frames and was followed by Evan Reed, who set down all three hitters he faced. Chris Hatcher retired the side in order in the ninth to secure the win and record his eighth save.
Meanwhile, Doug Davis went the distance for the visitors, suffering the loss after yielding two runs on nine hits, while walking three, hitting two batters and fanning three.
Omaha will send left-hander Ryan Verdugo to the mound Saturday night against Oklahoma City right-hander Jose Cisnero in the opener of a four-game series at Bricktown Ballpark.
